Star Wars voted best sci-fi flick ever

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Star Wars has been voted the best science fiction film of all time.

The 1977 classic topped a poll for having the best robot – R2-D2 – the best alien, Yoda, and the greatest hero, Han Solo.

The George Lucas-directed movie also won praise for having the greatest villain – Darth Vader.

"Star Wars is basically a great western put into outer space," said Scott Robson, head of movie listings service Moviefone, which conducted the survey that garnered 334,000 responses.

The film’s signature catchphrase, "may the force be with you", beat out such iconic classics as The Terminator’s "I’ll be back," and "E.T. – phone home".

Voters said the worst sci-fi movie was Battlefield Earth, the John Travolta flick about a group of humans fighting extinction by a race of aliens.

Nigel Lythgoe defends Twitter comments on ‘effeminate’ dancers

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Former Popstars judge Nigel Lythgoe has taken to his Twitter page to quash rumours he is a homophobe.

The 59-year-old producer and judge was lambasted in the US for his recent comments on So You Think You Can Dance.

Lythgoe criticised male duo Misha Belfer and Mitchel Kibel, saying: "I think you will probably alienate a lot of our audience. We’ve always had guys dance together on the show, but they’ve never really done it in each other’s arms before. I’d like to see you both dancing with a girl."

But after stinging criticism, Lythgoe has taken to Twitter to defend his comments.

He wrote: "The same-sex ballroom guys did remind me of Blades of Glory. However, I’m not a fan of Brokeback ballroom… I am very sad the word ‘homophobe’ is being used. That is someone who hates homosexuals. I dislike effeminate dancing! Wake up and listen!"

Nicole Kidman mansion mystery buyer revealed

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Nicole Kidman’s Darling Point, Sydney home was bought buy a former stockbroker who lives in Monaco, an Australian report revealed.

Rob Pitterino, who worked for County NatWest and now resides in Monaco, paid roughly two-thirds of the asking price for the modern residence that was her Sydney home with Tom Cruise – at AUD$13.2 million.

Kidman and second husband Keith Urban are said to be house hunting in the stylish eastern suburbs of Sydney for a town residence suitable for their daughter Sunday Rose.

Local real estate agents are said to be frantically searching for the couple, whose main home is in Nashville Tennessee.

The couple recently returned to spend Easter at their sprawling new heritage rural property near the country town of Bowral, about two hours south of the city.

Prospective buyers of the Darling Point home had to sign confidentiality agreements to inspect it, as did the buyer.
