Nigel Lythgoe defends Twitter comments on ‘effeminate’ dancers
Former Popstars judge Nigel Lythgoe has taken to his Twitter page to quash rumours he is a homophobe.
The 59-year-old producer and judge was lambasted in the US for his recent comments on So You Think You Can Dance.
Lythgoe criticised male duo Misha Belfer and Mitchel Kibel, saying: "I think you will probably alienate a lot of our audience. We’ve always had guys dance together on the show, but they’ve never really done it in each other’s arms before. I’d like to see you both dancing with a girl."
But after stinging criticism, Lythgoe has taken to Twitter to defend his comments.
He wrote: "The same-sex ballroom guys did remind me of Blades of Glory. However, I’m not a fan of Brokeback ballroom… I am very sad the word ‘homophobe’ is being used. That is someone who hates homosexuals. I dislike effeminate dancing! Wake up and listen!"
